This week a legion of diminutive Nintendo robots invades American homes. Chibi-Robo, made exclusively for Nintendo GameCube, puts players in control of a 4-inch-tall robot who travels back in time, meets aliens and blasts robotic spiders, all in a day's work. The cute anime cartoon style of Chibi-Robo belies a bizarre, creative storyline that revolves around little Chibi-Robo, who only wants to bring happiness to his human family.

With the help of his lounge-singer-wannabe sidekick Telly, Chibi meets and communicates with a host of wacky toys that come to life at night. These include a pirate, a mummy, Space Hunter Drake Redcrest (a legendary action hero) and the Free Rangers, a battalion of egg-shaped soldiers. Each character has a distinct personality that shines through as Chibi works to help his family achieve happiness. That's not always easy to do in a home where the parents are having marital troubles, their daughter thinks she's a frog and the teddy bear has an unhealthy addiction to honey.

“Chibi-Robo represents a great blending of American and Japanese pop-culture sensibilities,” said George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. “Its freewheeling approach lets players progress at their own pace while they explore a huge, adventure-filled world.”

Chibi can don a variety of different suits that give him new abilities and help him communicate with other characters in the game. For instance, while wearing his dog outfit he can interpret what the family dog is saying when he barks. Chibi can scare people while wearing his ghost outfit or even turn day into night after putting on his pajamas.

Players can focus solely on their main goals or wander off to do side tasks that help increase the happiness of the household. Whether they fly through the air on their Chibi-Copter or target small obstacles with their Chibi-Blaster, the only restriction they have is a limited power supply. If it runs low, they just plug themselves into the nearest outlet. Chibi-Robo offers the kind of nonlinear approach that Nintendo has pioneered with other games, such as the puppy-training Nintendogs or the music-making Electroplankton. Players can proceed at their own pace and decide how much they want to accomplish at a given time.

The gaming media already has singled out Chibi-Robo as much more than a cute cartoon adventure. According to 1UP.com, “…there's a subversive streak of humor to the game, as well as the ever-fascinating premise of being a tiny creature in an outsized real-world environment…” And IGN.com says”Chibi-Robo is a colorful and lighthearted affair that is appropriate for just about any age group, young or old.”

Chibi-Robo is Rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and Older. For more information about the game, visit www.chibi-robo.com.

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata today challenged a crowd of game developers to think differently and take a fresh approach to the creation of video games. During his keynote address at the Game Developers Conference in San Jose, Calif., Iwata said Nintendo will provide developers with the tools they need to disrupt the traditional methods of game creation, much as the company already has.

These tools include the controller for Nintendo's next home console (code-named Revolution), which lets users control the action on their television screens through the motion of the controller itself. The controller lets game developers create new kinds of gaming experiences, ones that enhance the experience for hard-core gamers while making video games more accessible and less intimidating to novices. The new forms of innovative software that can be created by any size developer will be made available for download via Revolution's Virtual Console service.

“This new approach is like stepping onto an unexplored continent for the first time, with all the potential for discovery that suggests,” Iwata said. “No one else can match the environment we're creating for expanding the game experience to everyone. Our path is not linear, but dynamic.”

Iwata also announced partnerships with Sega and Hudson to offer downloadable access to their classic games via Revolution's Virtual Console. Revolution owners will be able to relive their past gaming glories from the Sega Genesis console by playing a “best of” selection from more than 1,000 Genesis titles, as well as games sold for the TurboGrafx console (a system jointly developed by NEC and Hudson). These games join Revolution's access to 20 years of fan-favorite Nintendo games from the NES, Super NES and Nintendo 64 eras.

Iwata also revealed for the first time that a new game called The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass would be released for Nintendo DS later this year.

Iwata, a game developer himself, revealed behind-the-scenes stories about the development of three key initiatives.

For the industry leading Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, internal engineers and developers overcame a series of hurdles to make the system seamless and flexible enough to allow players to choose to play wirelessly either with friends or against unknown opponents. The Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection reached 1 million unique users in just 18 weeks – nearly five times the adoption rate
of the leading online game console network.

He described a pivotal meeting in coming to agreement on development of the incredibly popular “brain games” in Japan. A leading Japanese scientist attached a sci-fi-looking wired helmet to a Nintendo staffer and then visually demonstrated stimulation of brain activity as the staffer played prototype software.

Finally, he described the hundreds of sketches, dozens of prototypes and company-wide collaboration that led to the final form of the unique Revolution controller system, which resembles a traditional TV remote control. He called the related research and manufacturing costs of the new control system, “…our method to disrupt the market…realizing a new way to connect a player to his game.”

Gamers aren’t the only ones salivating in anticipation of Nintendo’s new console Wii. This past week, investment bank Merril Lynch raised its target share price from $25 to $29. For the non-business savvy, this means that all the consumer and games industry enthusiasm for Wii is raising Nintendo’s stock even before the system is released. Why’s that good news for fans? Well, if Nintendo is worth more and they keep making more, they’ll create more of the gaming goodness we all know and love.

And speaking of Wii, details surrounding Ubisoft’s FPS Far Cry have finally started to leak out. Far Cry, a very successful first-person shooter across myriad platforms, will feature motion control on Wii: flicking the nunchuck attachment upwards will make the player character jump and moving the Wiimote forward will activate the sniper rifle. Graphically, Ubisoft’s Andre Vu told podcasters VGMFusion that Far Cry will push Wii to its limits running at 30 fps in 480p. It’s good to hear that developers are taking advantage of Wii’s pro-scan capabilities.

In DS news, Nintendo announced the final release dates for two first party titles in a press release today. Square-Enix developed Mario Hoops 3-on-3 will be available on September 13th and Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2: March of the Minis will hit shelves on September 27th. Based on screenshots alone, both games look hot so mark your calendars.

You might have caught it here on Associated Content a couple weeks back, but Nintendo and MTV’s “Played-Out” contest still has two days left so head on over to http://playedout.mtv.com and enter if you haven’t already. The grand prize winner receives an all-expense paid trip on a Zero-G zero gravity plane for them and a friend as well as a Nintendo DS Lite and copies of Metroid Prime Hunters, Mario Kart DS, and Tetris DS. Free DS Lite people! Hop to!

The Nintendo Wii is one of the most popular game systems this Christmas and here are ten great presents for those who already own a Wii or who will be receiving one this year under the tree. All of the below listed items are available from a variety of retail sellers including Wal-Mart, Best Buy, GameStop and others.

The one gift every Wii gamer needs to the Madden NFL 09 All-Play. This game in the classic game series is the football game to own. Madden NFL 09 All-Play will cost around $50.

Mario Kart with the Wii wheel is a great game for all members of the family. Mario and friends are well known characters to most gamers. Mario Kart is a racing game with numerous tracks that will keep the gamer entertained for a long time. Mario Kart will cost about $50.

Guitar Hero is another game that has taken the nation by storm. Various packages are available for the Nintendo Wii.

Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII is a classic fighter plane game for the Nintendo Wii. Blazing Angels reasonable cost of about $20 makes it a great bargain.

Call of Duty: World at War is a mature shoot 'em up game for the Nintendo Wii. For about $50 this game can burn off a lot of stress.

A lower cost alternative of Call of Duty: World at War is the Medal of Honor: Vanguard. This game is a little over a year old and you can find them for less than $20. Other titles in the Medal of Honor series are great games to consider as well.

For those looking for an 'educational' game, consider something from the Sims series. The Sims series games have players build societies and other similar tasks that require reasoning and prioritizing skills.

Older games might be interested in the Namco Museum Remix which includes numerous classic games for the early years of video games including Super Pac Man, Dig Dug, Galaxian, and others. This game will cost about $20 or less.

A wireless controller for the Nintendo Wii is another great item to avoid tangled cords and pulling the Wii onto the floor. A wireless controller from Nintendo will cost about $50.

Still not sure what to buy? How about a gift card from Wal-Mart, Best Buy, GameStop or other retailers that sells games and accessories for the Nintendo Wii. A gift card will allow the gamer to choose their own present and get just what they want this Christmas.

DSi XL Versus iPad: The Battle of the Bigger Versions

The Nintendo DSi XL comes out on March 28; the Apple iPad on April 3. Both are essentially bigger versions of things that already exist, but how much of an improvement are they really?

We know that comparing the Apple iPad to the Nintendo DSi isn't exactly fair, but we aren't comparing the two devices to each other on a feature-by-feature basis. Instead, we're taking a look at the value that each holds as an upgrade to its respective ancestor. In other words, is bigger better, and which bigger is better?

Flip through the gallery below in order to get the full effect, or, if you'd prefer, click here to see the article as one long list of words and pictures.

The thing about Wii MotionPlus is that there haven't been a whole lot of games supporting it. Outside of last summer's Wii Sports Resort (and upcoming Red Steel 2 and Flingsmash) there's really only some sports games utilizing the tech. According to a recent interview with Reggie over at MTV Multiplayer, it's because Nintendo isn't really pushing for any kind of control scheme from third parties.

“What's unique with Nintendo is we don't force our developers to stick to a particular type of control scheme, and you've seen that — everything from the new Metroid title to be single remote driven to FlingSmash utilizing the Wii MotionPlus,” he said. “So it's all about what's right for the game.” While we're inclined to agree with the latter part, we still wonder why nothing is using MotionPlus — especially since it's something that greatly improves the core functionality of the Wiimote. And considering almost everyone has MotionPlus by now (or soon will, if they're Walmart shoppers looking for a great bundle), why not develop with MotionPlus in mind?

As for more MotionPlus games from Nintendo, Reggie teases “more titles that are coming” and that it “continues to be a core part of what we do.” So, the take away is this: even though Nintendo just released a new piece of hardware, it's not too worried about supporting it with content — kinda like every other peripheral the company has ever released. Yeah, we're talking about you, Wii Speak!

20/05/2008 : 5 reasons to love this beach

Beautiful Beach by celticsong22- In and Out

It could not be immediately determined if Foulk had an attorney.

Foulk was appointed director of Napa State Hospital in 2007. Hospital officials declined to comment.

“We did not know anything about this until Long Beach police came to the hospital and arrested him this morning,” said Nancy Kincaid, spokeswoman for the California Department of Mental Health.

She noted the alleged incidents predated Foulk's arrival at Napa State Hospital.

“He was not in one-on-one contact with patients,” Kincaid said. “He had no clinical hospital privileges, so he wouldn't have been offering treatment.”

Dr. Stephen W. Mayberg, director of the state mental health department, said Foulk had been fired.

Napa State Hospital Administrator Dolly Matteucci is serving as acting executive director while the department searches for Foulk's replacement, Kincaid said.

At the time of Foulk's appointment to Napa State Hospital he was lauded for his lengthy career in mental health services in both the private and public sectors.

Prior to taking the position in Napa, Foulk worked for the state Department of Mental Health as the Chief of Program, Policy and Fiscal Support, the Long Beach Press-Telegram reported. Before that, he held positions as chief executive officer and chief operating officer of private community acute psychiatric hospitals, including CPC Horizon Hospital and Clinic in Pomona and CPC Alhambra Psychiatric Hospital in Rosemead, according to a Department of Mental Health news release.

Napa State Hospital is one of the largest state mental health facilities in the United States, with about 1,260 beds for patients. Many of the hospital's patients come from the criminal justice system – including those found not guilty by reason of insanity. No juveniles or child molesters are treated at Napa.

The Surf Hotel in Hampton Beach, New Hampshire, was engulfed by a major fire late last night, which also affected adjacent buildings.

WBZ-TV reports that the Surf Hotel was destroyed in the fire, but no one was hurt, as it is closed for the winter.

The Surf Hotel's official Web site described the hotel as a small family-owned operation “situated in the middle of all beach activities … directly opposite the Atlantic Ocean at Hampton Beach, NH.”

The area is about an hour north of Boston and a popular tourist destination.

The AP reports that Hampton Beach has a history of major fires, including incidents in 1915, 1923, 1950, and 1999.”

Five buildings in all were destroyed by the fire, per Boston.com, which also adds the following details about the blaze:

A fire alarm activated at 295 Ocean Blvd. shortly after midnight, said Hampton Fire Capt ain David Lang. Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire on the first floor of the wood-frame hotel and thick smoke billowing from the building.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
